There are numerous sensor technologies that can be used to provide liquid level feedback; ultrasonic sensors, capacitive sensors, and magnetic reed switches are but a few that spring to mind. For many, if not most, general liquid level applications, these technologies work just fine, and provide adequate precision. However, some liquid level applications, such as precision filling and dispensing applications, require higher precision.
That’s where sensors utilizing magnetostrictive technology come into play. Magnetostrictive linear displacement sensors are in widespread use in many industrial positioning applications because of their inherent accuracy, wide operating temperature, and ruggedness. Those characteristics make magnetostrictive sensors a perfect choice for precision filling and dispensing applications.
In the example shown, the sensor allows for extremely accurate, reliable, and repeatable filling of a plastic “bladder”.
